Assessment and the Power of Feedback

With students taking so many high stakes tests, why should a teacher use valuable class time to test what is being done in class? With the right type of assessment, however, students can actually learn from assessment. Feedback is the key! Participants will look at different assessments with an eye toward what will promote student learning, and explore utilizing feedback more regularly in class.

Advanced Topics in Assessment (open to 2010 SAS or 2011 Feedback participants only)

As education shifts from the pitfalls derived from high stakes testing, there is compelling research that indicates authentic formative assessment, focused on student thinking and student work, is an essential strategy for teachers.

On day 1, participants will consider what can really be used in your classes daily. What is worth changing and what isn't? Participants will explore some topics more deeply and consider new ideas.

On day 2, David Foster (see below) will describe an assessment cycle tied to student thinking, using state of the art materials, and the innovation of successful teachers to bring formative assessment practice to the reality of the classroom. Materials and video cases will be shared.

Opening Banquet: June 28th, 2012

How will the new Common Core State Standards affect the teaching and learning of mathematics? How might the CCSS influence summative and formative assessments? How are the standards being addressed, embraced and what innovations are occurring in other states? How will curriculum change? What are some examples of curriculum and assessments for the CCSS? How will teaching and learning change? This session will address these questions and share work and products from several states that are embracing the new core standards.
