2008 Summer Conference Information

CPM is pleased to announce its first national conferences devoted to the “best practices” for teaching mathematics used in the CPM curriculum. This summer CPM will offer 42 sessions that will include assessment, study team and reading strategies, CPM courses (overviews, how they are written, sharing sessions), technology, elements of classroom management, and mathematics topics. (Click here to see a tentative list of topics. Times may also change.) The opening and closing sessions will be keynote addresses by the founders of CPM, Judy Kysh and Tom Sallee.

This conference will be useful for all math teachers. Be sure to let other teachers in your school know about it. Invite an administrator to attend; there will be some sessions for them. Note that this conference, while helpful with the teaching of any math class and CPM in particular, is not a substitute for the workshop series that prepares teachers to use a CPM course.

West Coast (MDT, PDT): Sacramento, California on July 11-12.

East Coast (EDT, CDT) in Annapolis, Maryland on July 25-26.

A summary of the schedule for the conference is shown below. (Click here for the detailed schedule.)

Friday:
7:00-8:10 breakfast hosted by CPM and check-in
8:15-10:30 opening keynote and mathematics activity
10:45-12:00 sessions
12:00-1:00 lunch hosted by CPM
1:00-2:15, 2:30-3:45, 4:00-5:15 sessions

Saturday:
7:00-8:10 breakfast hosted by CPM
8:15-9:30, 9:45-11:00, 11:15-12:30 sessions

CPM will sponsor most of the costs associated with the conference itself, including breakfast and lunch on both days. A group block of hotel rooms have been reserved for each location and participants may reserve and pay for their room as part of registration. (Do not call the hotel directly.) Both cities have substantial service by Southwest Airlines. Both hotels are near malls and theaters and about four miles from downtown. Participants can minimize their costs by registering early according to the schedule below to take advantage of discounted registration and a post-conference travel expense rebate.

Registration: $75 - through June 15
$125 - June 16 through July 2

NOTE: Monday, June 30th, 2008 is the last day for any and all changes or cancellations. No refunds will be issued after Monday, June 30th, 2008.

The preferred and easiest way to register is online with a credit card at www.cpm.org/summerconference. You may also use the registration form in this newsletter and fax (credit cards only) or mail it (credit, check, or purchase order) to CPM as noted on the form.

Logistical issues: Both airports—Sacramento International (SMF) and Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) -- are usually easy departures on Saturday afternoons. One hour for check-in and security should be sufficient once you arrive at the airport terminal. Allow half an hour travel time to each airport from the hotel. Add 15 minutes to return a rental car. The program will end at 12:30 followed by lunch and a keynote address that will conclude by 1:45 p.m. Schedule return flights accordingly. Participants will receive conference details and program information in June.
